Since spotting her at Unwind, we’ve been totally smitten with the jewellery of Claire Griffiths, a.k.a Yellow Bear Wares. Fashioned from vintage knitting needles, the necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings are a little kitsch, a little fun and just really excellent as far as we’re concerned.
And how could we resist a good Cat Power reference in her trading name? Says Claire, “I am often asked where the name ‘Yellow Bear Wares’ comes from, years ago I was referred to as ‘yellow bear’ thanks to a friend naming me after a Cat Power song “yellow hair, you’re such a funny bear” it kinda stuck as my online name for a long time and now I’m selling my wares I thought it would be the perfect name for this venture.”
We love the palette Claire uses in her jewellery – lucky that vintage needles come in such fab colours! We asked Claire how she got into the vintage-haberdashery-turned-jewellery biz. “Growing up in a home where the slogan ‘reduce, re-use, recycle’ was adhered to with much enthusiasm has played a huge part in my design aesthetic. I appreciate the odd juxtaposition of objects created by the upcycling movement and I have used that as inspiration within my designs; who expects to find knitting needles around people’s wrists or hanging around necks?”
Yellow Bear Wares wooden knitting needle jewellery, pictured top, will be premiering at the Bristol Wool Fair from the 5-7th of September and then in her online shop shortly after. Claire, who is as lovely as her brightly hued jewellery, has kindly offered Pom Pom readers a discount! From now until the end of September, nab yourself 10% off her wares on Etsy with the discount code IREADPOMPOM – lucky us!
