POMCAST 15 + MELANIE GALL

Hi Pomcast Peeps! Another month has gone by and we’re here again with our knitting themed blend of edu-tainment (it’s educational and informative guys!)

Make sure to download the Soundcloud app if you want to listen on a mobile device, or if you subscribe to Pomcast on iTunes it should appear on your device now! And while you’re having a listen, why not rate us or even leave a little review – thanks!

This episode is sponsored by Kettle Yarn Co. with a special introduction of this Pom Pom favourite’s first series of patterns – The Boardwalk Collection. Inspired by a day at the seaside, the designs capture the excitement of the smells, sounds and vibrant colours found along a British boardwalk.

Featuring six vibrant designs from Rachel Coopey, Isabell Kramer, Maria Magnusson, Renée Callahan, Rachel C. Brown and Linda Lencovic the collection spans summer to autumn with heirloom items you’ll love all year! The designs range from accessories to garments, each knit in one of Kettle Yarn Co.’s new vibrant colourways; Peony and Marigold provide a softer counterbalance to the bold brights of Purple ReignVerdigris and Neckinger, and the eye-searing Padparadscha! We have two skeins of this gorgeous yarn to give away…

Tell + Tell

Sophie has not let her knitting trouble beat her… and is persevering with Sous Sous and her Fika socks. Lydia is locked into a neck and neck battle with Meghan. Who will finish their Greco first? Only time will tell…

News + Reviews

The main news we have is of course the release of our Autumn 2015 issue, which is imminent. We are sure you have already seen the previews on ravelry, subscribed and shared your excitement on our forums… but if you haven’t check it out!

Pom Pom Quarterly, Issue 14: Autumn 2015

On the review side of things, we discuss the Kettle Yarn Co. Boardwalk Collection, plus we have a swatch with the yarn that accompanies this set of patterns, the gorgeous BFL and silk blend Islington DK.

Interview

We had a lot of fun chatting with classically-trained musician Melanie Gall, and found out more about her research into the lost knitting songs of WW1 and WW2. Catch this funny lady performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August.

She also played us at our own game and interviewed Lydia and Sophie for her podcast The Savvy Girls Podcast – have a listen if you fancy finding out more about the magazine, the podcast and being a knitter in London.

Ravelry Realness

Tiny knitted things – pointless or cute? Please discuss. Well, while you debate that, here are some patterns that fall into the category of ‘teeny weeny’ and also ‘adorbs’.

Decisions, decisions I love all of the designs but if I had to choose it would be Promenade and I have the perfect vintage glass button to finish it off.

I love the simple, summery lace of Promenade!

  5. Charlotte July 31, 2015 at 10:12 pm #

I think Arcade is my favourite – I love the detail on the bottom front of the sweater. I also love the blobfish pattern (the cute one over the realist one). Can’t wait for my next PomPom mag to arrive – hurry here lovely magazine.

  6. Erin Joan July 31, 2015 at 10:35 pm #

The Promenade sweater is beautiful! I would include a large wooden button and wear with a cotton sundress for summer.

  7. Inês G. July 31, 2015 at 10:49 pm #

I love Promenade! Also, I can’t wait for the Autumn issue of Pom Pom! Great episode, as always!

    I adore Pavilion.

After your interview I can’t wait for the fringe to start. My knit group meets at the Safari every Monday (Town Mouse Knitters) and we are planning to see Melanie. ?

  9. Emma August 1, 2015 at 4:42 pm #

Yay, new Pomcast! The entire collection is yummy, but I think Arcade might be my favorite. Perfect for everyday wear and still a bit fancy!

  10. Katie Emma August 1, 2015 at 5:29 pm #

    I love Pavillion! I don’t wear shawls, but I love a good wide scarf/stole.

  11. Blithe Spirit August 1, 2015 at 9:45 pm #

Love Arcade the most I think. And I have Melanie Gall’s first CD of WW1 knitting songs -I’ve played it when I’ve hosted friends for a knit night – she’s great and the songs are really interesting and in some cases very funny.

  12. Sarah August 1, 2015 at 11:05 pm #

I’m itching to make Promenade; I’ll wear it to death! Thanks for the fab giveaway!

  13. Rachel August 1, 2015 at 11:47 pm #

  14. Sue H. August 2, 2015 at 12:58 am #

I like Pavilion for its versatility. Thanks for this lovely giveaway!

  15. Mr. Josiah Bain August 2, 2015 at 2:38 am #

I’d love to knit the Pavilion wrap. I e-know Renee (we were in the same issue of Knitty together), and when it came out, I knew it would be something I’d love to knit.

  16. Bente Simone August 2, 2015 at 6:30 am #

Nice. I’ve been looking at arcade for a while already. A favorite for sure. Even though promenade comes close.

Arcade is definitely my favourite – I’ve bought the pattern, and have a nice silk/linen blend in an indigo blue which I think will work perfectly – just have to find the time to swatch!

  18. Kate August 2, 2015 at 9:36 am #

Loving Arcade! Feeling a purchase coming on!

  19. Simone August 2, 2015 at 11:46 am #

So hard to choose but I think I’d have to start with Bagatelle
    ,

  20. Vanessa August 2, 2015 at 12:09 pm #

I think my favourite has to be Jetty! Although I think the whole collection is great I think I’d be able to wear Jetty with my everyday handmade wardrobe :D I do love a good bit of shoulder wear!:p

  21. Hannah glow August 2, 2015 at 12:13 pm #

My favourite is pavilion!! And arcade! Ah, can’t decide …

  22. Vanessa August 2, 2015 at 12:15 pm #

Great episode as well ladies I really enjoyed you discussing your favourite three albums! And the style of music you enjoy! :D plus your episode helped me not to be travel sick!

  23. Lisa August 2, 2015 at 12:26 pm #

I love Seaward by Rachel Coopey and have already purchased and downloaded the pattern!
Can’t wait to get started. Also can’t wait for the new PomPom mag. The wrap on the cover is sooooo tempting. It would brighten the Scottish winter!

  24. Cia August 2, 2015 at 1:39 pm #

The entire collection is gorgeous, but Jetty is my favourite. Can’t beat a lovely shawl!

  25. Elaine Tom August 2, 2015 at 2:10 pm #

I just love all the things that Isabell Kraemer does so that would be my choice

  26. Charlotte August 2, 2015 at 2:19 pm #

  27. wattamatou August 2, 2015 at 6:48 pm #

arcade is definitely my favorite design!

  28. Emily August 2, 2015 at 8:40 pm #

Pavilion is so, so gorgeous!!!! It’s going into the Ravelry queue…..thanks for the podcasts, ladies! Perfect audio companions for my summer holiday knitting :)

  29. Sam August 2, 2015 at 10:24 pm #

I love Promenade and hope to start it before summer is out.

  30. Lisa August 3, 2015 at 7:16 am #

Lovely patterns one and all, and knit in those colours… summer on a stick. Promenade shall be shooting straight to the top of my queue though – I love knitting lace and it looks just the thing for pairing with a flouncy, full-skirted floral frock.

  31. María August 3, 2015 at 8:50 am #

    My favorite is Bagatelle

  32. Mel August 3, 2015 at 11:51 am #

my favourite is Jetty, I love the eyelet detail on the back and it looks so soft and squishy knitted up in the Islington yarn.

  33. Nikki August 3, 2015 at 11:58 am #

So torn between Arcade and Seaward. Will plump for Seaward as I’m on a hat kick and I already have a jumper on the needles. And Seaward is STUNNING.

  34. Lily August 3, 2015 at 12:38 pm #

Hi there, I know the comments mostly concern the give away, but I’m really loving the academic explorations of knitting in the previous pod cast and the current one. I’ve written on knitting and making in the Victorian era- we should set up a journal on knitting in literature/ art/ history!!! :)

  35. Camanoah August 3, 2015 at 3:48 pm #

I like Pavilion for its architectural pattern, but Arcade is a close second.

  36. Ceridwen August 3, 2015 at 5:22 pm #

Arcade is my favourite. I love the diagonal details, giving interest to its simplicity. It’s so good in that verdigris colourway. The Pavilion wrap would come a close second for me.

  37. Melanie August 3, 2015 at 11:45 pm #

I’d have to go with Pavilion. All in all a lovely collection. And the colours are delightful. Was tough choosing a winner.

    Looking forward to the Pomcast…

  38. Rachel R. August 4, 2015 at 7:28 pm #

Rumor has it that these muggy Summer temps will eventually give way to Fall, so…Promenade! Because it would look lovely over a sundress or two, no? :)

  39. Tamera L August 5, 2015 at 5:37 am #

    Oh, Arcade! I think I’m in love…

  40. Melanie August 5, 2015 at 4:54 pm #

I got my knitting badge as a Brownie. Apart from my Booklover’s Badge, that was my favourite badge. But I cannot for the life of me remember what I had to do to get it. If anyone knows or has an old handbook, I’d love to know…

That’s a fascinating interview, because this year was the centenary of WWI… But I’ve never heard this aspect. Good job.

  41. Dana August 5, 2015 at 7:05 pm #

I absolutely love Arcade…I’d love to knit it in their lovely shade of purple, called Purple Reign, love that name. :) Thanks for the chance to win.

  42. Julia August 6, 2015 at 8:00 am #

Arcade would show up the stitch definition of islington dk perfectly. Think it is just gorgeous, so this one gets my vote!

  43. Knitgizmo August 6, 2015 at 8:22 am #

Tough decisions pre-coffee but I would have to say I would definitely knit the bagatelle-just sounds like it would dance off my needles :0p (sorry, see aforemarntuoned lack of coffe and therefore sanity)

  44. pistachios August 6, 2015 at 7:15 pm #

Love your podcast. Fun and informative. For the giveaway, Pavilion is beautiful and versatile, and perfect for the coming autumn.
