Knitting Outside the Box is a pattern book rich in detail and techniques. Each day this week we’ve been taking a closer look at the patterns with Bristol, building up to our virtual launch on Saturday 28th October!
The book is split into three chapters and each one focuses on a different part of Bristol’s design process. The third and final part of the book goes by the empowering title ‘Go for It!’. Building on the creative exercises and technical methods for shaping, now it’s time to put it all together and make it happen…
For the final three patterns, Bristol breaks down the designs from start to finish and talks through the process. Is that the end? Well you’ve got each pattern written out to enjoy, now to decide which to cast on for our KAL!
Named after Francesca Woodman, American photographer
Yarn – Mrs. Crosby Plays Hat Box
Woodman’s shoulders and neckband are shaped with welts, drawing the fabric in and adding structure and unexpected weight to a fine gauge fabric. This sweater is an exploration of the interplay between conceptual idea and wearable garment, letting the technique dictate the shape, letting the shape dictate the technique, or a happy marriage between the two.
Named after Ann Druyan, creative director of NASA’s Voyager Interstellar Message Project
Yarn – Madelinetosh Tosh Sport
Dramatic and swooping, Druyan follows a path of unexpected angles to create a lush, oversized shawl to wrap yourself up in. I’ve combined chevrons, short rows, and increases and decreases to build and shape a graphic and geometric fabric that both grows unexpectedly and hangs beautifully.
Sometimes inspiration comes from unexpected sources. The Lillemor Shawl is a handknit replica of a bit of winter magic: the shape of windblown snow on a windowpane at dusk. Worked in sections in sequence, it curves around corners and changes direction using increases, decreases, and short rows.
We hope you’ve enjoyed this wander through the book with us and Bristol. The 28th October is our virtual launch on YouTube here! Wherever you are in the world, you’ll be able to join in via the magic of the internet to watch Bristol chat about how Knitting Outside the Box was put together. Get your knitting ready at – 7 pm GMT / 2 pm EST / 1 pm CST / 11 am PST
If after seeing all these amazing patterns this week, you have a burning question about how those knits got of the box, you can ask your question during the Virtual Launch. Thanks to our sponsors Spincycle Yarns, those who get involved in the Q&A will be entered into a prize draw to win two skeins of their Dyed in the Wool (as used in the Jemison Cowl) and a super cool Spincycle enamel mug!
See you tomorrow!
