It’s a big week for us here at Pom Pom, not only is our big Christmas shindig this Friday, but today we are releasing our very first book – Take Heart: A Transatlantic Knitting Journey by Fiona Alice. Over the last three and a half years, we’ve been so honoured to be able to grow and improve Pom Pom Quarterly to the standard it is today and for a while we wondered what our next step would be. All of you have proved that print is in fact not dead as many media analysts would have us believe; rather, thoughtfully produced, beautifully printed matter is more beloved than ever, especially when it is devoted to a subject that holds a special place in the reader’s heart. In our case of course, that subject is knitting and craft.
As an extension of the love for all things woolly that we produce in Pom Pom, it is with great pride that we introduce you to the Pom Pom Press. We have a lot of wonderful projects coming up with authors and designers we know you love, and we couldn’t be more excited to kick things off with Fiona Alice. You may recognise Fiona’s name or work from the pages of Pom Pom Quarterly, where she debuted in Issue 7 with a gorgeous hat, which she had appropriately named Take Heart. We were so smitten with Fiona’s proposal for that issue that we actually printed her sketches and design inspiration – we knew you all would love that insight into her process as much as we did. That hat is still one of the most popular patterns we’ve ever published.
Having worked with Fiona as a contributor and later in the Pom Pom office, we knew pretty quickly she would be the perfect person to work with on the first book for the Pom Pom Press. We adore her design aesthetic, clear sense of style, and her skills as an illustrator too. The designs in Take Heart are all inspired by Fiona’s recent transatlantic life. Originally from Novia Scotia, she now resides in London and each of the pieces in the book draw on her experiences in Canada and the UK and each pattern uses yarns she’s fallen in love with from those two countries.
The book includes ten original accessory patterns that are perfect for the cold winter months, as well as a reprise of the hat that started it all, Take Heart.
At 102 pages, it’s full of gorgeous photography by long-time Pom Pom collaborator and friend, Juju Vail. The photos were shot on location on the stunning Gower coast in South Wales.
You can view (and purchase!) all of the patterns on Ravelry here, as well as view and purchase the print and digital edition via our website here. The first 200 print copies of the book ordered via our website will be signed by the author herself, so be sure to be quick! Each copy comes specially wrapped with a sticker illustrated by Fiona. Fiona will also be on hand to sign copies at the Pom Pom Christmas Party in London this Friday for the official launch of the book!
We can’t thank you enough for coming on this new adventure with us! We’re so lucky to play a part in your own knitting journeys and we are grateful for that every day.
